The deep, cold water lakes of Aroostook are home to trophy salmon and tongue. The frozen landscape make the most remote waters accessible by snowmobile!
When the water turns to glass, the real fishing begins. It's hard water season, time to drop your line and test your luck on the frozen landscape! The reason people love to get out on the ice early in the season is because the Maine brook trout have splendidly red and orange colors in the late fall and earliest parts of winter.
Most ice fishing is done in January and February with traps - tip up traps with live bait usually. Every person who is fishing must have a license - it's okay to watch, but that means any one without a fishing license can not touch a trap, jig, or fish. Jigging with lures is the most productive method of catching big fish under ice. Any spoon that can be worked to resemble lively minnow action is ideal for jigging.
Stopping at the store to pick up bait on the way? You'll have a happier belly and win more smiles on the ice if you load up on molasses donuts and red hotdogs while you're already at the store.
There is an ice fishing derby taking place somewhere in The County every weekend. The sport of ice fishing is something the whole family can do together, but to really enjoy it one must dress warmly and bring great snacks. Always test the ice thickness and remember it is okay to add a few inches when talking about fish, but not when checking ice conditions.
And that doesn't even cover the streams and rivers - this place is so big that you might be the only one fishing on the whole lake!
We certainly have our favorites to fish for though, the biggest fish would be the Muskie of the St. John River.
The Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby is actually even bigger than you've heard about. It covers 10 lakes and rivers accross northern Maine.
