St. John River

Located in the North Maine Woods, the Upper St. John River is the largest, least developed free-flowing river system east of the Mississippi. Starting at the outlet of Baker Lake, you can travel over 130 miles before reaching the first settlement in the town of Allagash. The Upper St John has long been recognized as one of the most valuable unsettled rivers in the eastern United States because of its solitude, and vast wildlife watching opportunities. The Nature Conservancy has acquired 185,000 acres of the St. John River Valley, including 40 miles of river frontage beginning at Baker Lake. Paddlers seeking adventure need not look any further than this great natural wonder.
