The arrival of early snow across Maine Aroostook County signals the perfect opportunity to embrace the winter season and find adventure on the Nordic ski trails. New Sweden, Maine has a long history of cross country skiing and is known as the birthplace of Nordic skiing in America. Skiing was brought by the Swedes when they settled the Swedish Colony. Today, Maine's Aroostook County boasts more than 25 maintained ski areas and is New England's premier destination for skiers and biathlon competition.

Aroostook County is known its long, snowy winters. It offers an extensive network of famous trails for both skate and classic skiing. Whether exploring world-class biathlon training centers, community trails networks, or backcountry areas through Maine’s north woods, you’ll experience unforgettable Aroostook adventures and warm hospitality.

Trail conditions

Each of the 25+ cross country ski areas in Aroostook County are maintained independently. Groomed community trails

This is a winter sport lovers paradise! Most of the towns in Aroostook County have a network of maintained ski trails. Here are just a few of our favorites:

Biathlon training centers

Fort Kent Outdoor Center

Located in Fort Kent, Maine and boasting nearly 20 miles of groomed ski trails for skate and classic skiing. The facility features a 30 lane shooting range, 27 room waxing building, timing and stadium, rental shop, and the iconic 10th mountain lodge built to resemble the famous Fort Kent Blockhouse. Host of the 2004 IBU World Cup and numerous championships.

Nordic Heritage Outdoor Center

Located in Presque Isle, Maine and featured 30 miles of groomed ski trails for both skate and classic skiing. Temporarily Closed Until Further Notice. The facility has a Host of the 2011 IBU World Cup and numerous championships.
