Downhill Skiing in Aroostook

"Skiing for Christmas!" is a tradition in northern Maine and we've never been let down!

Seasons

The three alpine ski operators in Aroostook are open late December to mid-April. Mid-February is the busiest time on the trails.

Northern Maine has three family-style downhill ski areas and boast 120" of annual snowfall for freshly powdered trails all winter long.

BigRock Mountain is carved into Mars Hill Mountain and boasts 1,000' of vertical terrain making it the biggest vertical drop in northern Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. Friendly rental shops and ski instructors make for a great day out on the trails and the warm lodges invite you in for hot lunch and dinners. Keep a smile on your face all day, because you never know when you're going to meet your next trail buddy! Here full day and half day passes are most common, but season passes are also available at each of the three ski areas.

Family style skiing

Aroostook County is a great place to learn how to ski! The reason is simple - the three alpine ski areas in this part of Maine are certainly not the biggest or busiest. But they are certainly staffed by some of the friendliest ski instructors, have the best natural snow, and are big enough for every level of skier in the family.

Each lodge offers equipment rentals and onsite cafes while BigRock Mountain and Lonesome Pine Ski Area both feature bar areas. During the ski season it is common for local bands to play live music in lodge which creates a festive environment.

Learn to ski

All three alpine ski areas offer ski and snowboard lessons from seasoned instructors. Lessons are offered at a charge by the hour or by the day. It is best to call ahead and reserve a time for your lesson, but walk-ups are welcome. Most lessons are taught 1-on-1, but if you have a family then simply ask if a group lesson is available. It is common to rent equipment and take a lesson, but it is expected you will bring your own warm winter coat, pants, and gloves.

Family Ski Areas

Aroostook County gets 120" of natural annual snowfall - this translates fantastic ski trails and lots of powder pockets! No one does winter sports better than the Crown of Maine.

Skiing by Christmas

It's true - all three alpine ski areas make it a point to open before Christmas. This is a long standing tradition in The County and one that is appreciated by all who travel here to ski.

Warm Lodges

All three alpine ski areas feature lodges with hot food. These are great spaces to warm up and grab lunch, but also a nice place relax and chat with the locals.

Equipment Rentals

All three alpine ski areas offer equipment rentals - just drive to the mountain and leave the outfitting to the pros! Rent skis, poles, snowboards, helmets, and boots.
