roostook County is America's favorite place to ride - but how are the conditions right now? The 38 snowmobile clubs of Aroostook County each tend a portion of the 2,300-miles of famous trails. Each Thursday the clubs report conditions and what has been groomed. This helps visitors plan and communicates any trail closures or reroutes.

Now let's dive into the powder and get you updated on the conditions! For a more detailed report or club information simply click the club name. The purpose of the Thursday Snowmobile Trail Report is to provide visitors with an overview of 2,300-miles of snowmobile trails in the region, how recent weather affects the conditions, and upcoming events. 2/13/2025 Snowmobile Trail Report

We have been too busy to put out a classic trail report - sorry! We just got a ton of snow in the region on Thursday, February 14th. High winds on Friday the 14th are blowing the snow around, clubs are busy grooming to keep it down. All clubs who have spoken this week are reporting epic conditions from the snow needed, but requesting time to groom.

Totals from the 2/13/25 storm are:

  • Madawaska, Maine 11" of snow
  • Stockholm, Maine 14" of snow
  • Houlton, Maine 10" of snow

Up to 16" of snow expected on Sunday, February 16th.

2/06/2025 Trail Report

Another week has gone by, and we have picked up some more snow, not a lot but every bit helps. Seems like all clubs are getting out there and doing some magic with what they have to work with. The wind has helped in certain areas and in others it has blown off the fields. Conditions are still considered early-season riding in some areas and in others the trails are just beautiful.

We are planning to get a few inches Thursday night into Friday morning, which will certainly help conditions. Clubs will be working hard to get this snow packed before the weekend so please be patient with them. Some clubs will also be finishing some signing on their trails, if you see them out stop by and thank them for what they do.

With clubs opening up more trails this week and the posts that have been put out there traffic will be on the heavy side this weekend. Remember wooded trails are still on the skimpy side so ride with caution.

Once again, the best ride is from Eagle Lake out towards the Allagash and in between. The Oxbow area is still in great shape as well.

Trail Info:

1/30/25 Trail Report

How fast time goes by here are the last days of January when winter is going. Riding is getting better everyday day; it is the best no, but it is better than sitting on the Couch. The best ride there at the moment is from Eagle Lake North to Fort Kent and up in the Allagash, this area is seen a few more inches than the rest of the County and by the reports that I am seeing it is excellent. Are there still some thin areas yes but all in all that is where you will get the best riding in. As for the remainder of the County there is some riding to be had.  The other jackpot is in the Oxbow area. They have some good conditions down that way as well.

While it is the end of January there are areas that are considered as very early conditions,  there are some sections of trails where there are no signs or markers, just because you know where the trail is doesn’t mean that it is rideable especially if there are no signs.

With this cold weather the lakes have frozen down quite well, and they are good for riding. Southern Aroostook got about 5" of very light snow on the morning of 1/30.

This is the annual Moosestompers weekend down in Houlton with a lot of fun activities, Check it out on Moosestompers weekend 2025 website: https://moosestompers.com/

Trail info:

Presque Isle Snowmobile Club: They have been out on their railbeds and are reporting good conditions, other than these trails they have not been across any others, so please ride with caution.

Linneus Sno Sports:
Little trail update…. As you all know we are off to a slow start this year, the snow is very very thin. Tomorrow we are going to go out and check the conditions headed south. Anything north of the clubhouse is not passable at this time due to lack of snow. DO YOUR SNOW DANCE. 5" of new snow 1/30. We will post another update tomorrow afternoon!

Eagle Lake Winter Riders:
They have been out on ITS 85 and 120 just have been panning and reporting decent conditions.

Limestone SnowHawks:
Limestone was out last night and are reporting good conditions out on their system. The only trail that is considered closed is the base runway trail. The border trail is in decent condition. Caswell has been out, and Van Buren has been out to plan their section of ITS 81 two weeks ago and this section was thin.

Caribou Trails:
ITS 83 North to Sullivan Road has been gone over a few times and reports are that it is in decent shape, Trail 105 to Blackstone has been done as well. The Cross-town trail, which is 83/90, is passable with several rocks. ITS 83 South towards Washburn is rideable but thin in areas. Trail 88 to New Sweden is open to Northstar variety and at the moment dead ends there. Trail 88A has been panned once and very thin in open fields and woods. Trail 89 towards Connor has also been planned but dead ends where it meets Pleasant Ridge Riders. The fields are very thin. All trails in Caribou are signed and marked but they remain ungroomed as there is little snow on these sections, are they passable yes but not recommended.  Trail 89 towards Limestone has also been opened and is very thin for about a quarter mile off the Railbed after this section is gets a little better. Railbed North to Blackstone will be groomed Thursday night.

Sly Brook Nonriders:
We have been busy the last few days trying to get our trails ready for you. Right now, from the clubhouse to 96 to red arrow turn around we have two culverts that popped up at 1/1/2 mile and a water issue at 4/1/2 mile we have some caution signs up and putting more tomorrow otherwise that is good riding. 73 to Eagle Lake is groomed and in great shape. Clubhouse to 96 north of Eagle Lake is not recommended unless we get more snow. 73 north to Fort Kent turnaround is also not recommended because of bare fields and water issues but it is passable for experienced riders. Clubhouse to 73A to Fort Kent Wallagrass stream is rideable but will not be groomed until more snow. Thanks for supporting our club in these trying times. Safe travels to all 😊

Fort Kent Snoriders:

1/23/2025 Thursday Snowmobile Trail Report

This weekend is shaping up to be a great weekend here in The County as the 20th Annual Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby is happening,  just because the trails are not up to par you can certainly come out and do some ice fishing on some of the most beautiful lakes in the State.  If you are out on the lakes, please pay attention as there will be more than the usual activity on our frozen bodies of water.

Another week has passed and not a lot to report here in The County except the temps are extremely frigid. There are a few areas in The County that have some riding and are reporting decent conditions and other areas where there is nothing at all.

The better riding in the Crown will be found from Fort Kent to the Allagash area up into Estcourt. The reports that I am hearing are that the wooded sections are still a little thin but where they get out on to logging roads it is good.

There are park and rides throughout the County and those might be your best bet to leave from. Island Falls, Presque Isle, Caribou, Stockholm Landing in Stockholm and Washburn all have park and rides located on Railbed trails. Fort Kent also has park and Ride in close proximity to the rail bed, can park at Lonesome Pine and at the Groomer Barn, please do not block any doors. Moosetown riders also have a Park and ride up in Allagash. The boarder station hours are Monday-Friday 8am-3:45pm (Closed Holidays).

NOT DONE YET: Local trail 7 to Greenland Cove has notbeen groomed and a small wooded section in Danforth near the Baskahegan Landingthat loops behind houses which can be detoured by going 300 yards down the sideof the road, waiting on more snow before taking the groomer though thatsection.  JOIN or RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIPHERE: https://eastgrandsnowmobiling.org/join/

1/9/2025 Thursday Snowmobile Trail Report

Trying to write a trail report with this type of beginning is certainly challenging at best. While some clubs are doing some panning here and there the system here in the County are quite fragmented. Clubs have been extremely busy with cutting brush and blowdowns from the earlier wind and rainstorm we received in December. Now they are ready for a healthy snowstorm so we can get out and ride. Whatever there is for riding it is extremely early season, and everyone must use extreme caution. Please do not squeeze the throttle too hard when taking off as there is not a lot of snow under the track.

What is decent are the railbeds but unfortunately, they do not connect to everything as fields and wood sections are extremely thin. Not all systems have signs up, so not to cause problems with landowners it is best to not venture out just because you know where the trail goes, if you do decide to venture outride at your own risk.

Lakes up this way are freezing up well and will continue as we will be getting the coldest air so far to date.

There are park and rides throughout the County and those might be your best bet to leave from. Presque Isle, Caribou, and Washburn all have park and rides located on Railbed trails. Fort Kent also has park and Ride in close proximity to the rail bed, can park at Lonesome Pine and at the Groomer Barn, please do not block any doors. Moose town riders also have a Park and ride up in Allagash and they have been out to Estcourt and reporting good conditions and trail to Chamberlain store has been panned but very thin. The boarder station hours are Monday-Friday 8am-3:45pm (Closed Holidays).

What I am trying to say is that there is some riding to be had but is it worth an 8-hour trip well that is up to the individual. We all need more snow to get everyone going here in the County. Mother nature will grace us with white gold at some point so in the meantime keep dancing.

TRAIL UPDATE!!

Oxbow-Masardis Snowmobile Club:  We are actively working on our trails. ITS 85has been panned and is looking good. ITS 86 was done 2 days ago 71D towards Libby's will be done this afternoon and the oak hill trail will be done this afternoon. The trails are in decent shape but not a lot of snow. Just remember it is early season riding, but it is riding. There is some logging activity on ITS 85 near Church Road near the 71A intersection. They are currently building us a bypass road so just be careful in that area.

Limestone Snowhawks: panned

Moosetown Riders: panned
