The Swedish Colony in Northern Maine

The Swedish Colony in Northern Maine traces its roots back to the efforts of William Widgery Thomas, Jr. As an official from Maine, Thomas played a pivotal role in creating the Maine Swedish Colony and leading the first group of settlers from Sweden to New Sweden. Interestingly, the establishment of this colony can be indirectly linked to America's Civil War in the 1860s. Thomas, who had previously served as a diplomatic courier, was sent to Gothenburg,Sweden, where his deep appreciation for Sweden and its people grew. He quickly immersed himself in the language and customs, setting the stage for establishing the Swedish Colony in Northern Maine.

Preserving Swedish Traditions

These days, the Swedish traditions continue to be deeply ingrained in the fabric of these communities, celebrated throughout the year with events like Saint Lucia in December and Midsommar in June. During the Midsommar Festival, the colony comes alive with merriment and joy as locals gather to partake in traditional Smorgasbords. They indulge in a feast of KÖttbullar (Swedish meatballs), Sill (pickled herring), grilled salmon, boiled new potatoes with fresh dill, soured cream, and raw red onion. And as a sweet finale, they relish the first wild strawberries of summer with a dollop of cream. These delectable delights create an atmosphere of togetherness, where visitors and locals bond over the shared love for Swedish cuisine.

The Spirit of Midsommar

Midsommar, the highlight of the Swedish calendar, commences on the closest Friday to June 21, as everyone gathers flowers to weave exquisite wreaths for the girls' hair and to adorn the majestic maypole.

On Saturday, the maypole is raised in Thomas Park in New Sweden, surrounded by traditional music, enchanting storytelling, and lively folk dances. The young and young-at-heart unite for the traditional ring dance around the maypole, filling the air with laughter and joy. It is a celebration that truly embraces the essence of Swedish culture.

The New Sweden Midsommer Festival shines as a true gem, drawing crowds from far and wide. It offers a unique opportunity to witness the charming folk costumes that hail from various regions of Sweden. As ladies grace the event in long flowing dresses adorned with intricate embroidery and flowers in their hair, the men don their knickers and vests, creating a scene straight out of a fairytale.

A Tri-Cultural Community

Stockholm, Maine, is a remarkable Tri-Cultural community with a rich history.

Swedish families settled in this area, working diligently to clear the land and establish farms along South Main Street and Route 161. Fast forward to 1974, when the Stockholm Historical Society & Museum opened its doors in the historic John & Lewis Anderson building, which was originally the town's first business back in 1902.

Today, this captivating museum boasts 6,200 square feet of exhibits, narrating the unique journey of the town of Stockholm. With its tranquil ambiance, welcoming community, and growing appeal, both residents and newcomers find Stockholm an ideal place to call home.

Notably, many homes and businesses in this part of The County proudly display Swedish flags on their flagpoles and homes, while local shops offer the traditional Dala horse—a charming wooden horse statue, usually painted red.

From the enchanting Midsommar Festival to the mouthwatering delicacies of a traditional Smorgasbord, the Swedish Colony welcomes visitors with open arms. As you explore the rich heritage and customs, you'll experience the true essence of Sweden right in the heart of Maine. Join the festivities, savor the flavors, and create lasting memories in this captivating cultural haven on earth.
