The beauty of Maine's Aroostook County is be enjoyed in all seasons whether your driving at night under the bright starry sky or the sunset hour. Aroostook County is an escape from the bustling traffic other vacation destinations are known for and instead the traffic here flows at your pace. The distance between Madawaska at the Top of The County to Molunkus at the southern tip is 147 miles - that is because Aroostook County is the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. The beauty of the region can be seen from the National Scenic Byways and State Scenic Byways that wind through bustling downtowns and along sparkling rivers. Slow down to enjoy the journey by stopping at scenic pullouts for selfies or a picnic at one of the museums and many famous roadside curiosities.

Where Are The Byways?

St. John Valley/Fish River National Scenic Byway

The nations newest National Scenic Byway connects the St. John Valley towns of Van Buren, Madawaska, Fort Kent, Allagash, Portage, and St. Agatha, mostly on US Route 1 and State Route 11.


Million Dollar View Scenic Byway

Perfectly named for its jaw dropping views of the Chiputneticook Chain of Lakes to the east and direct views of Mount Katahdin and the Appalachian Mountain chain to the east this byway is on US Route 1 in Danforth and Weston.


Katahdin Woods & Waters National Scenic Byway

Designated for the outdoor recreational opportunities, this byway connects the Katahdin Region towns of Shin Pond, Mount Chase, Patten, Stacyville, Sherman, Hersey Township, Medway, and Millinocket.

Pine Tree Trail

Designated in 1937 this inland route (road) was designated as a tourist drive from Portland to inland Maine. It traverses Maine's towns, lake regions, forests and farmlands, from the rugged seacoast to the Crown of Maine.

Motorcycling

It is true Motorcyclist love to ride here because of the clear visibility and wide open roads. US Route 1, US Route 2A, and Route 162 are often traveled by motorcycle groups while the paved secondary roadways often lead visitors toward the lake areas which feature popular "twisties".

Four Corners of the United States and Maine

People across the United States and the world visit the Madawaska Four Corners Park to enjoy the view and facilities. The location of the park is the most northeastern point in the US. This means people touring to collect all four corners stop on their pilgrimage. For motorcyclists, they are often on one of two tours; the SCMA USA Four Corners Tour or the Maine Four Corners Tour.

Roadside Attractions

Madawaska's Four Corners Park

Located on Main Street in Madawaska, the park is beautifully landscaped and features photo opportunities, gift shop, and even a 9' tall moose.


America's First Mile

Situated on Main Street in Fort Kent, the large granite monument marks the very first mile of the United States on US Route 1. The famous route connects all the way from Fort Kent, Maine to Key West, Florida.

Gateway Crossing Bridge

Connecting Historic Market Square to US Route 1 is the iconic pedestrian bridge aptly named for its hometown's claim as being "The gateway to the United States" for many Canadian Travelers coming through the nearby land port of entry.


Block Houses

Located in downtown on US Route 1 is the original For Kent Block House, this land mark is a great place for a picnic and reminder of the border disputes of the Bloodless Aroostook War. The blockhouse in Fort Fairfield is nestled on Main Street near the bank of the Aroostook River.


Potato Barrel Trees

When potatoes were harvested by hand, Aroostook County had a lot of potato barrels, many of which are still around today. At Christmas time many towns erect a stack of barrels and decorate it with greenery and lights - much like a Christmas tree. Fort Kent and Mars Hill keep their trees decorated year round.


Maine Solar System Model

The 2nd largest solar system model in the western hemisphere begins at the sun at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and stretches all the way down US Route 1, past Houlton and ends at the dwarf planet Eris in Topsfield. Each of the nine planets feature a 3D model of the planet, scenic pull out, information panel, and park.

Museums

Slow down to enjoy the journey by stretching your legs and exploring one of the fascinating museums - look for their open flags.

Sunday Drives

It's okay to take the long way, consider taking a sideroad for closer views of working farms or travel farther to try a restaurant you've heard rave reviews for.

Moose

Keep your eyes peeled - the yellow moose crossing signs are no joking matter. Moose are most active 30 minutes before and after dusk.
