Aroostook County is mostly a flat area and the many fields of the region means greater visibility and safety for cyclists on the road. Several outdoor trail centers maintain exclusive mountain biking trails open to the public, however this means summer calendars are booked with club "Ride Nights", special races, and a warm culture for the sports of road cycling and mountain biking.
Long distance riding is made possible by United States Bike Route 501 that connects quiet the rolling roads of Bangor all the way through the Town of Allagash. This incredible bike route is significant to the region for it's connection to the United States and Canada border crossings of The County. Fun landmarks like the blockhouses of the Aroostook War, Potato Barrel Trees, and even the Maine Solar System Model add anticipation for every turn in addition to already beautiful vistas.
The Federally recognized United States Bike Route 501 (USBR 501) connects Bangor, Maine through the St. John Valley Cultural and Fish River National Scenic Byway and to New Brunswick, Canada.
This ride follows the banks of the Penobscot River where Maine's logging heritage boomed in the 20th century and offers scenic views into the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
Forests depart into rolling hills as agriculture dominates the Crown of Maine and potato blossoms sweep every rolling hill as far as the eye can see. Located in Presque Isle, they features mountain biking tracks with more than 18 miles to ride. Hosts many biking events and ride nights, but is most known for the Nordic Trail Festival each July.
This trail system follows both sides of the Meduxnekeag River. This is an easy 5-mile trail ride.
The Aroostook Valley Trail, Bangor Aroostook Trail, and Southern Bangor Aroostook Trail are considered multipurpose trails meaning mountain bikes are welcome. These trails connect the entire county meaning your can bike endlessly all day!
Aroostook County is a mostly flat rolling region and large steep hills are not common. 38 bike routes have been mapped in the region utilizing Ride with GPS for mobile turn by turn directions help cyclists find their way to some amazing views. Cyclists should park in downtown areas, and can quickly make their way out of town to rural wide open roads. The months of June, July, and August add excitement to your ride much of the landscape is blooming from lupine to potato blossoms to sunflowers.
