The trail system is extensive with over a 1,300-miles of marked trails waiting to be explored and many restaurant and lodging establishments directly accessible from those trails. What to Expect on the Trails

Varied Terrain:

Riders can expect to experience many terrain types such as fields, forests, dirt roads, or rail trails. All rail trails in Aroostook County are wide, flat, gravel trails and are multipurpose trails which means it is not uncommon to find a mountain biker, pedestrian, or horseback rider using the same trail or bridges.

Well-Maintained Trails:

The 33 local ATV clubs and associations do a fantastic job of maintaining the trails, ensuring they are safe and enjoyable.

Scenic Views:

Riders can expect to experience many terrain types such as fields, forests, dirt roads, or rail trails. These wind along the rivers to lakes or up hill tops to reveal scenic views. Riders should be on the look out for museums and historic sites along the way, these places are open most weekends and welcome riders to stop in for a look around. Two major landmarks that are destinations for ATVers would be the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad trestle bridges, one in Monticello and one in Washburn

Friendly Community:

The ATVing community in Aroostook County is welcoming and friendly to the sport. Local restaurants and lodging cater to riders, most of which have signage on the trails alerting you of their services or how to safely access them from designated trails.

Best Areas for ATVing

1. The Northern Region
  • Fort Kent to the Town of Allagash: This area offers rugged terrain and beautiful views of the St. John River. The rail trail in this area is known as the "Saint John Valley Heritage Trail".
  • North Maine Woods: ATVing is not permitted anywhere within the gated North Maine Woods.
2. Central Aroostook
  • Caribou: Riders may park at the Caribou Park and Ride and venture out toward Stockholm and New Sweden for fun trailside riding or take a break at trailside museums like the New Sweden Historical Society.
  • Presque Isle: Two major parking areas in Presque Isle are at the Star City Riders at Arnold Brook or the trailhead parking on US Route 1 near the Aroostook Centre Mall.
  • Fort Fairfield Diamond Ride: Riders can choose to park their truck and trailers in either Washburn, Caribou, Presque Isle, or Fort Fairfield as a 52 mile diamond of trails is a popular day trip ride broken up by great dining establishments and river views from the Bangor and Aroostook Rail Trail.
3. Southern Aroostook
  • Houlton to Patten: The trails in this region provide a mix of wooded areas and open fields, with plenty of opportunities to see local wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty of Maine. There are many ATV rental companies available in this area and popular destinations include Pleasant Lake, Mount Chase, or the Southern Bangor and Aroostook Trail Trestle Bridge in Monticello over the Meduxnekeag River.

Best Times of Year for ATVing

Spring (May to June)
  • Trail Opening: It is up to each ATV club when they open their trails. Typically they open after Memorial Day.
  • Cooler Weather: Spring offers cooler temperatures and fewer bugs, making it a pleasant time to ride.
Summer (July to August)
  • Peak Season: Summer is the peak season for ATVing, with warm weather and long daylight hours.
  • Trail Conditions: Trails are usually dry and in great condition, ideal for long rides.
Fall (September to October)
  • Beautiful Foliage: Fall is a spectacular time to ride, with the changing leaves providing a stunning backdrop.
  • Cooler Temperatures: Cooler weather and fewer insects make for comfortable riding conditions.
Winter (December to March)
  • Snowmobiling Season: Many ATV trails double as snowmobile trails in the winter. ATVing is not permitted in winter.

The legendary ATV trail network is declared to be in the top 10 trail systems of North America! With a variety of access and rail bed trails, you can access legendary sights, great times, and every town in The County.

Plan Ahead: Check trail conditions and weather forecasts before heading out. Make sure you have a trail map and know the routes you plan to take.

Gear Up: Wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet, gloves, and sturdy footwear. Bring extra layers, as weather conditions can change quickly.
