Family Activities in Northern Maine

This summer, let kids be kids!

From camping, hiking, and educational adventures, there is plenty to do on a family visit to Aroostook County.

Check out these fun activities:

  • Francis Malcom Science Institute in Easton, Maine: Opened in 1983 this educational facility features an outdoor nature classroom and the northernmost planetarium in the Continental United States. Public programs are offered throughout the year providing people with the opportunity to learn in a wonderfully rural environment.

  • Allagash Canoe Trip (4 days) out of Weston, Maine: Looking for a little adventure? Allagash canoe trips are popular with families, plus it's a great trip for spotting moose!

  • Drive through the Solar System: The Maine Solar System Model was recently extended from its original southern terminus of Houlton to the newest identified dwarf planet model located in Topsfield. Take a drive and see the planets!

  • Hiking with Kids: Take to the woods for a family hike, or check out Maine Wilderness Adventures in Thorndike, which offers families the opportunity to experience a Maine wilderness adventure in a safe and comfortable environment. With the expertise of a registered Maine Guide you'll travel to some of Maine's most remote wilderness treasures, learn the history of the land, witness some of our most majestic creatures in their natural habitat, discover new personal strengths and capabilities, and awaken your senses feeling refreshed and new.

Events this summer:

  • Check out Caribou Days and don't miss the parade August 1st through the 3rd in Caribou.

  • Don't forget to look up and admire the hot air balloons between August 22nd through the 2th when the Crown of Maine Balloon Festival happens in Presque Isle.
